I've known Scott Macchiano since elementary school. In the late '80s he was in the band Yellow Snow. Today he lives across the street from us. He rarely leaves Pleasanton, but some of you may remember him from my kids' birthday parties. After the last one he told us he liked our friends and was starting to get to know them just from our parties. My brother called and told us that on Sunday Dec. 4th, while we were at Jim's memorial, an ambulance came and took Scott away. All we knew at first was that he was in a coma. Thankfully, we finally got some really good news yesterday.

It's difficult to diagnose brain trauma so the hospital didn't know if he had a stroke or a seizure. It took a week to figure out what happened to him. Apparently he suffered an epileptic seizure early Friday evening. He wasn't discovered until Sunday. A window was opened so even though the heat was on he may have suffered some hypothermia during the freezing nights. His body was stiff when his friend found him. Since he vomited during the seizure it settled in his lungs and the acid caused some burning through the skin which gave him pneumonia and a blood infection. He was near death when they took him out of the house. He couldn't take visitors for a while. We heard that his eyes would slowly move to follow voices and there was some communication through blinking. The following Sunday Keri and I went to visit but I stayed outside the room because of a sore throat. He was really bad at the time. Tuesday, Keri visited again and was happy she did because he was ten times better and it was great to see the improvement. Scott started to move all his limbs that day and was already trying to escape the hospital. He was diagnosed for the first time with diabetes and there will obviously other complications as well as therapy, but the great news is that it appears he will be making a full recovery!.
